Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)
What is Uterine Fibroid Embolization?
Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive alternative to hysterectomy for women experiencing symptoms related to fibroids in their uterus. This innovative procedure involves blocking the blood supply to the fibroids, causing them to shrink and eventually die off.
Unlike a hysterectomy, UFE does not require the removal of the uterus, making it an attractive option for women who wish to preserve their fertility or avoid the risks associated with surgery. Recovery time is shorter and there are fewer complications associated with UFE, making it a promising option for women seeking relief from fibroid-related symptoms.
What happens during the procedure?
Light sedation
Before the procedure begins, you’ll be given a light sedative to relax you and ensure you don’t feel anything during the procedure
Inserting the catheter in your wrist
Next, a catheter is inserted into the wrist and guided to the arteries that supply blood to the fibroids using X-ray imaging.
Ultrasound to find the fibroid
An ultrasound is then used to identify where the fibroids are located in the uterus.
Blocking the blood supply
Once the catheter is in place, small particles are released into the arteries to block the blood supply to the fibroids. This deprives them of the nutrients they need to grow and helps to shrink them over time.
